One always see this at the cashier of a restaurant. And the superstitious restaurants will stick gold coins somewhere on the tip box. How often do we tip in Singapore. I guess not very often for Singaporeans. Our 7% GST and 10% service charge already sometimes make us unhappy, i cannot imagine any Singaporeans wanting to tip further.
So why do some restaurants still put up a fight and insist on putting a tip box there? They are playing with law of large number that people might want to tip, maybe the non-Singaporeans. And they can slowly accumulate until it reaches a large amount.
I for one, will not tip. Not in Singapore, not anywhere actually.
